In the Winter: For those with no Japanese ability seeking English jobs in Japan, nearly all of our clients are English speakers and we have a variety of English speaking jobs in our Hakuba Ski School from late November/ early December through to the end of February/March. We offer ski instructor jobs, snowboard instructor jobs, backcountry guide jobs, office/reservations team, daycare, drivers and cafe staff – cooks, baristas and waiting staff. All positions require appropriate licensing/certification where relevant and experience is preferred.

Position Overview:  Evergreen International Instructors represent Evergreen Outdoor Center by taking a professional, enthusiastic and well groomed approach.  They are able to provide a high quality of ski and/or snowboard instruction and high level of guest service and extend themselves to ensure that our guests experience a rewarding holiday in Hakuba.  Guests will be of all ages and ability levels and lesson types will vary.  Help to ensure that every guest has a safe, fun & informative experience.  

Key Responsibilities: 
  • Provide guests with a fun, safe, enjoyable and memorable learning experience while exploring appropriate terrain on the Hakuba Valley mountains.
  • Teach skiing and snowboarding to Yeti's, Hero's and Adults at various levels.
  • Conduct lessons according to the standards set out by your respective alliance and Evergreen International Ski School.
  • Be knowledgeable of timing needed for lifts and teaching terrain so instructors are prompt for check-in and other lessons.
  • Ensure that your personal schedule and availability is accurate; communicate absences and lateness as soon as possible.
  • Be knowledgeable of the programs Evergreen International Ski School offers and carry prices and maps to share with guests.
  • Be familiar with the safe use and instruction of the resorts chairlifts and carpets.
  • Know and adhere to the 10 Alpine Responsibility Code rules. Teach them to students during lessons.
  • Ensure students’ equipment is adequate and comfortable.
  • Assist in setting-up and running special events.
  • Know the safety procedures for missing or injured students and guests.
  • Use proper radio etiquette when issued a portable radio.
  • Read and adhere to all instructions and policies in the Evergreen International Ski School Manual.
  • Conclude each lesson by thanking the guest. Provide guidance for appropriate terrain to pursue – expect return business by creating enthusiastic riders.
  • Attend training clinics to enhance and improve your riding and teaching ability.
  • Be prepared to assist other departments as needed.
  • Assist Ski School Director, Operations Manager and Team Leaders as required.  
Key Areas of Knowledge:
  • Abide by policy and procedures as outlined in the Evergreen Outdoor Center & Evergreen International Ski School Handbook.
  • Adhere to Evergreen’s health and safety policies and incident/ hazard reporting system
  • A good knowledge of ski &/or snowboard instruction with your respective alliance 
Key Skills:
  • Industry specific certifications in ski &/or snowboard instruction
  • Experience in ski &/or snowboard instruction, within a recognized Ski & Snowboard School
  • Proven ability to quickly establish professional relationships and gain the confidence of guests of all ages and abilities
Key Attributes:
  • Be able to think outside the box and problem solve effectively and efficiently
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing personal development within the industry
  • The ability to show compassion and empathy to students, while being sensitive to different personalities and cultures.
For Winter Ski or Snowboard Instructor positions, the pre-requisites are:
  • Minimum Level 1 (ski/snowboard) Instructor Certification
  • Valid First-Aid and CPR Certification (minimum standard level)
  • Previous season’s experience is an asset
For Winter Backcountry Ski/Snowboard Guides positions, the prerequisites are:
  • Level 1 Operations Canadian Avalanche Association or International Avalanche Safety Course equivalents
  • Valid Wilderness First-Aid and CPR Certification (minimum 80hr course)
  • Extensive backcountry ski/board touring experience, route finding skills, thorough weather analysis, snowpack data and snow stability evaluation skills, strong leadership and communication skills and winter rescue training
  • Advanced backcountry skiing and or snowboarding skills and good fitness – Ski Guide Certification and/or previous season’s experience guiding is an asset
